As if playing at Twickenham, meeting a rugby legend and getting a tour of the stadium wasn’t enough, Maximum Rugby competition winners Maldon RFC came out of the Twickenham Tag competition as champions.

The Essex based club completed a fantastic day by winning the tournament and coming out with a framed signed England shirt from Austin Healey and Paul Sackey for their club house.

Along with Grimsby RUFC, they went down to Twickenham last Friday to enjoy a tour of the stadium and play on the pitch itself, with various other goodies and surprises along the way - including a meet and greet with former England player Austin Healey.

Simon Peacock, from Maldon RFC, said: “We managed to get 10 players and 7 spectators and everyone enjoyed running out onto the Twickenham pitch as Austin Healey announced each team. Austin made us all line up along the touch line and sing the national anthem which is something we’ll only get to do once. We all loved playing tag rugby for the first time and managed to win the tournament.

“It was fantastic to play against all the different people from the different clubs around the country and some of the playing outfits were pretty special. Some of the young players had fantastic ball skills and look like they could go a long way in the game. We’re all grateful to Maximum Rugby for giving us this opportunity to play at Twickenham.

“The only bad thing was that we had a few celebratory drinks after the tournament and 11 out of starting 15 of the team that played on Saturday had stinking hang overs.  We ended up losing our league game against Old Brentwoods 31–24.”

As for Grimsby… well it’s not that often you’ll see an England winger turning out for your club, but that’s just what happened for the Lincolnshire side when Paul Sackey joined their team for ten minutes - and I’m told Grimsby man Stuart Saunders even managed to out run him!

Grimsby captain Neil Corry told us about his day: “Everyone was smiling, it was fantastic. It was all very well organised, everybody went in to tunnel, and when you’re team was announced, you were led out on to the pitch. As captain, it was a great experience to lead out my team at Twickenham. It was brilliant, it was as if we were proper team if you like!

“Everybody got together on the pitch and it’s what you dream of. You get people to shut their eyes and imagine a big crowd being there.

“I think the biggest emotional highlight is when we lined up and looked at the crowd and where the royal box would usually be and sang the national anthem. It was almost like an out of body experience, like you were watching yourself singing the anthem on TV. It sounds ridiculous saying that now, but it was absolutely fantastic!

“I managed to get over for one or two tries, which added to my day. I can say I scored a try at Twickenham as well as leading my team out on to the pitch.

“We’ve taken hundreds of photos and there’s still a lot of texts flying about with people sharing their stories. People are still in shock I think, they can’t believe that they went to Twickenham! People are still very excited about it.”

Shontayne will make Johnson Hape

England could have another dual-country cross-code international lining up for them in the Six Nations in the spring.

Former Bradford Bulls and New Zealand rugby league player Shontayne Hape qualifies to play for England through the three-year residency rule in January, and would fit in one of the Martin Johnson’s problem areas - centre.

Hape won 13 caps in the 13-man code for the Kiwis before joining Bath on a three-year deal in May 2008.

And now he’s been handed a creditable testimonial by Bath’s coach, Steve Meehan.

Meehan said: “It’s possible. Come January they get the opportunity to change the EPS squad, and come January Shontayne will be eligible to play for England.

“If his form leading into January and through January is at the top then we’d expect to see him there.

“He is a mature player with a lot of experience and wouldn’t suffer from the same sort of bright lights that have got some of the younger guys in the past.”

Dual-code internationals have had mixed success in the England team. The most obvious example is that of Jason Robinson, a massive success in both sports, who scored England’s try in the 2003 World Cup Final.

However, failures such as the big-money transfer of Andrew Farrell from Wigan leave the cross-code argument up for debate. Of course England aren’t the only nation to experiment with this - players such as Iestyn Harris (Wales), Mat Rogers and Wendell Sailor (Australia) have all switched from the 13-man code to union (and back again) with varied success.

Hape would follow an increasingly long line of former Kiwi, and Bradford Bulls, stars in making an appearance for England - Gloucester winger Lesley Vainikolo and current Leeds Carnegie inside centre Henry Paul.

With injuries hampering the progress of Riki Flutey, Hape might well be the man to call in the new year as England look to improve on last season’s second place in the Six Nations.

Teams prepare for Twickenham

There were contrasting results for our two Twickenham Tag competition winners at the weekend.

Perhaps Grimsby had their eye on Friday’s trip to RFU HQ, as they suffered a 44-17 loss at home to Peterborough Lions, their first defeat of the season.

Fellow winners Maldon kept their unbeaten start of the season going with a 13-12 win over Clacton, with a try scored by Andrew Yardley and a conversion and two penalties scored by Lee Higham, both of who will be playing at Twickenham this week.

Another man hoping to step out on the Twickenham turf soon is England captain Steve Borthwick, who will be fit to play in the November test series after a scan revealed the forward has a sprained rib cartledge. Saracans director of rugby Brendan Venter said: “It’s not a serious problem and it certainly won’t stop Steve from being available for the internationals.”

He picked up the injury in Saturday’s 22-9 win over Harlequins, which kept Quins rooted to the bottom of the Guinness Premiership table after three defeats. It preserved Saracens 100% record so far, but they are behind Wasps at the top of the ladder after Danny Cipriani guided them to a 23-3 win over Worcester.

Leicester, London Irish and Northampton all recorded their second wins of the season at the weekend. Irish thrashed Leeds 56-7, scoring seven tries in the process and securing another bonus-point win, following their victory over Gloucester last week.

Leicester marked the opening of their new stand at Welford Road in front of 24,000 fans with a 15-6 win over Newcastle. Jeremy Stanton scored five penalties for the hosts, but they still remain without a try this season.

Meanwhile, Northampton recorded a superb 27-14 win over Gloucester.

Competition winners set for Twickenham!

Two teams will step out on the hallowed Twickenham turf for a tag rugby competition next Friday, thanks to Maximum Rugby!

Grimsby RUFC and Maldon RFC were selected as winners of our signup competition, and will now travel for the Twickenham Tag competition on Friday September 25, where they will take on the winners of the Scrum on the Beach series.

They will be greeted by a rugby legend, and will enjoy a stadium tour, signing session with England stars and prize giving in a jam-packed day!

It represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and Grimsby captain Neil Corry cannot wait!

He said: “We’re like a load of kids in a sweet shop. It’s unbelievable. I’ve been getting a team together over the last few days, and everybody at training had great big smiles on their faces.

grimsby

“It was something no one ever expected. It’s very exciting, nobody knows what to expect! A few of the lads have been to Twickenham on tours before, but haven’t even been allowed near the pitch, let alone play on it! The chance to play on it, well it’s just amazing!”

Ten teams will take part in the tag competition, in which teams can name squads of ten, with only five allowed on the pitch at any time.

Corry, a back-rower who has played for Grimsby for more than ten years, added: “We’ve not played tag before, but we’re quite a forward orientated team, so it’s going to be an experience.”

Fellow winners Maldon are also new to tag rugby, but they are confident their style of play will suit the competition.

Fly-half Stuart Pearson, 30, said: “It’s a great surprise. Obviously it’s everyone’s dream to play at Twickenham if you play rugby and we can’t wait for the day. Everybody’s really looking forward to it.

“We haven’t really played tag rugby before, so we’re a bit unsure of the rules! But we’re keen to give it a try and hopefully it will suit our style of play. We’ll definitely be going there to try and win the competition!”

maldon

Maldon started their season last Saturday with a 25-17 win over Millwall in Essex 1 League, while Grimsby also got off to a winning start in Midlands 2 North East, beating Nottingham Moderns 26-15.

Pearson, who has played for Maldon since the age of 13, added: “We suffered a bit last season through injury, but we’ve got a new coach this season with a new gameplan and we’re hopeful of competing near the top of the league.

“The Twickenham event will definitely bring the team closer and hopefully it will have a positive effect on the team for the season ahead!”

Fans flock in for season opener

entry header
Monday, September 7th, 2009

After a summer where rugby was catching the headlines for all the wrong reasons, the season got underway at the weekend.

The controversies that attracted considerable attention were seemingly forgotten as fans flocked to games in their numbers, with the Guinness Premiership setting a new record aggregate crowd for the opening weekend - 108,467, beating the previous best of 104,415 set on the opening day in 2006/07.

It was helped of course by the 67,684 people who watched the London double header at Twickenham, which saw Saracens defeat London Irish and Wasps triumph over Harlequins. The crowd eclipsed last year’s event total of 52,027.

More than 10,000 turned up to watch Northampton defeat Worcester (12,073) and Gloucester beat Bath (12,815) in what clubs will be hoping is a sign of things to come for the rest of the season.

Sale opened the season with a surprise 15-12 win over champions Leicester in front of 8,751, while 7,144 saw promoted Leeds Carnegie held by Newcastle in a disappointing 9-9 draw at Headingley.

Premier Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty said: “It was great to be able to focus on matters on the field this weekend and the clubs and our supporters didn’t disappoint. Sale Sharks set the tone by beating the reigning champions Leicester Tigers on Friday night to prove yet again what a competitive league this is.

“A record attendance at the London Double Header and strong crowds around the country allowed us to record our best ever attendances for a single round. I think it shows even in these tough times that the Guinness Premiership can offer great value for money family entertainment. The Race to Twickenham has begun.”

It’s hard to gauge just who will be leading the way in the fight for Twickenham, but promoted Leeds at least showed they won’t go down without a fight in their opening day draw. Veteran scrum-half Andy Gomarsall impressed on debut for the home side.

Northampton survived what would have been a surprise opening day defeat as they overturned a 17-7 deficit to defeat Worcester at Franklin Gardens, with Paul Diggin’s late try securing the points. It at least earned Worcester a bonus point, while Leicester and London Irish also claimed bonus points in defeats this weekend.

New season set for kick-off

entry header
Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

After weeks of grumbling over the “Bloodgate” affair, there is a welcome return to the field this weekend as the new rugby season gets underway.

Sale and champions Leicester kick off the new Guinness Premiership campaign on Friday evening as everybody looks for the rugby on the pitch to start doing the talking.

The Harlequins scandal, centering around former director of rugby Dean Richards, has hovered over the sport like a bad smell for what has seemed like an age, and it will be good to return to a sense of normality. For Quins, they are still breathing a huge sigh of relief that they will be allowed to compete in Europe this season, but all eyes will be on them when they travel to Twickenham to face Wasps on Saturday.

The summer of scandal has led to the Director of Elite Rugby Rob Andrew questioning whether some of rugby’s core principles have been lost in the transition from the amateur to the professional game since 1995.

He said: “Professional rugby was inevitable and the right way to go. But you begin to ask whether there was an element of self-policing with regard to those values in the amateur game.”

On the pitch, Leicester start the season as favourites to defend their title, with last season’s beaten finalists London Irish also fancied to challenge - they start their campaign against Saracens on Saturday.

Saracens - together with Gloucester, Wasps and Sale - start the season with a new figurehead after each changing their director of rugby, while newly promoted Leeds Carnegie will be hoping to better their previous two Guinness Premiership campaigns, which has seen them finish 12th and relegated. They host Newcastle on the opening Sunday of the season, as the Falcons begin life without Jonny Wilkinson, now plying his trade in the slightly sunnier climate of Toulon, France.

Elsewhere, perennial strugglers Worcester travel to Northampton and Gloucester host Bath, who are looking to put behind them the bans handed out to former captains Michael Lipman and Alex Crockett, Andrew Higgins and Justin Harrison over the summer.

Of course, the pros won’t be the only ones lining up to start their campaigns this weekend - thousands of amateur clubs up and down the country will be looking to kick off their season in style.
